Westminster Hall

Westminster Hall
The oldest surviving part of the Palace of Westminster that has long been used mainly for ceremonial occasions. However, since 1999 it has been used to stage debates on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons on issues that cannot be fitted into the timetable for the main chamber. The occasions are good opportunities for members to raise matters of constituency or regional importance, as well as those that fall outside the normal scope of party discourse. Thursday sittings are reserved for debating reports from select committees. Overall, though attendances are often limited to a dozen or so interested Members of Parliament, the sittings are being viewed as a useful complement to the work of the main chamber, not least because it makes some 400 hours or so available in an average parliamentary session.
